What Are They?

A dental crown is used to restore a damaged tooth – usually one that has a cavity that is affecting the whole tooth. To repair the damage, a prosthetic tooth is cemented over the gum, either to a synthetic implant or the remaining portion of the tooth, essentially replacing the affected tooth.

What Materials are Used in Dental Crowns?

Crowns can be made from a wide range of materials, including dental ceramic, metal or a combination of both (porcelain-fused-to-metal).

How Long Do They Last?

Dental crowns last between five and 15 years. The better your oral hygiene, the longer your dental crowns will last. Brushing your teeth twice a day and going for professional cleaning every six months will increase the lifespan of your dental crowns.

Some Things to Consider

Quite a large amount of a tooth needs to be removed in preparation for the fitting of a crown, meaning that the procedure should only be undertaken if absolutely necessary since healthy sections of the tooth will also be removed. Crowns featuring porcelain fused to metal can also be unsightly, as they have a metal substructure. This can mean that a darker line may occasionally be visible at the edge of the crown, when the gum recedes with age.
